Breitner was the leading figure of the Amsterdam Impressionism. Together with painter Isaac Israëls he represents the best of Dutch impressionism and is close to the 'tachtigers' group. Although he was born in Rotterdam and went to the art academy in The Hague his paintings of the 'real' Amsterdam is what he is best known for. He regarded himself as storyteller of the true everyday life of that period.
