This self-protrait was painted in 1887. At this time, van Gogh was clearly influenced by the French impressionists. This is one of many self-portaits by van Gogh where he choose a distinct color palette for each painting. From here he created his own famous style, full of color. He created a series of paintings that, although they incorporated many colorful strokes , all kept a strong and unique focus on the subject of the painting itself.
About Van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh was a post impressionist painter. His influence on the later expressionism and 20th century art is evident. During his artistic career he worked in Nuenen, Antwerp, Paris and later Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers. His fight with Paul Gauguin is still a little bit unclear, but is is said that Van Gogh cut his own ear during one of the arguments with the other painter.
van Gogh was very close to his brother and there was a lot of correspondence between the two. Today a rich source of information about the life and work of Van Gogh. We know that he suffered from mental illness and that eventually lead to his death , age 37.
He painted both (self) portraits, landscapes and still-lifes. Amongst his greatest works are 'almond blossoms', 'sunflowers', 'starry night', 'cafe terrace' and many more.
