This so-called militia piece (Dutch: 'schutterstuk') by Frans Hals is also known as 'the company of Captain Reinier Reael and Lieutenant Cornelis Michielsz Blaeuw'. Although Hals worked in Haarlem, near Amsterdam, this was the only work he did outside of Haarlem. After three years of working on the painting, he still did not finish the work in time. The painting got its nickname 'meagre company' because Hals painted the sergeants and officers slightly thinner than in other paintings. Traditionally he placed the more important figures in the left part of the composition.
About Frans Hals
Frans Hals was born in Antwerp but spend his working life in Haarlem, the Netherlands. He is best known for his militia pieces and portraits but also painted genre pieces. His style was colorful and exuberant, and not without humor as well. He painted his militia pieces ('schuttersstukken') as if you just walked in to the scene, less formal then some others.
Although he and van Gogh were by no means of the same generation, van Gogh had made it clear that he was also an admirer of Hals' style of painting. But also Monet and Manet made visites to his atelier in Haarlem. Maybe because of the more 'rough' style of painting. He deliberately did not make his paintings as smooth looking as many of his contemporaries.
For each of the artworks we've included additional detail pictures to show the quality of the materals we work with.
The 'Dutch Masters art' brand was born in the heart of the historic center of Amsterdam, on the Singel canal. Every day many holiday makers enjoy the rich culture of The Netherlands, especially in museums like the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum. Inspired by these famous canals and the rich history of the 17th century Dutch art we started our collection. We started with art from the golden age, but in later years we also added other famous pieces from later date, including van Gogh. So now you can find both baroque art as well as (post-) modernism on our website.
