In 1632 the then 26 year old Rembrandt painted The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp ('de anatomische les. Dr. Nicolaes Tulp' in Dutch). In this painting Dr. Tulp demonstrates the working of a muscle. On the table lies the deceased thief, Aris Kindt.
For esthetic reasons Rembrandt did not paint the exact medical reality. He felt free to do so. The light / dark effect in this painting makes it 'come alive'. He chose a composition where the observer feels that he is part of Dr. Tulps' lesson. The other surgeons are all positioned at the left.
The original painting can be found in the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
Dutch master painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was one of the most important painters of the seventeenth century. He made historic paintings, militia pieces and portraits. Amongst these portraits are many self-portraits and sketches. Also his wife, Saskia, son Titus and even the maid and his girlfriends are portrayed.
His work can be seen as the pinnacle of the Dutch Baroque. He was clearly influenced by the Italian master Michelangelo Caravaggio.
Rembrandt best known for his light and dark style of painting ('clair-obscur' / 'chiaroscuro'). By adding light to an object or person the viewer immediately focusses on the subject the painter wanted the focus on. He also made a lot of sketches and etchings. Worldwide his 'Nightwatch', 'The Anatomy lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp', 'the Jewish bride' and 'The Syndics' are probably the most recognized. They can all be seen in museums in Netherlands.
For each of the artworks we've included additional detail pictures to show the quality of the materals we work with.
The 'Dutch Masters art' brand was born in the heart of the historic center of Amsterdam, on the Singel canal. Every day many holiday makers enjoy the rich culture of The Netherlands, especially in museums like the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum. Inspired by these famous canals and the rich history of the 17th century Dutch art we started our collection. We started with art from the golden age, but in later years we also added other famous pieces from later date, including van Gogh. So now you can find both baroque art as well as (post-) modernism on our website.
