Originally the painter had painted a decorative painting within this work on the back wall. But because of artistic reasons all that remained was a nail in the wall. And by using the light from the window on the left (a Vermeer trademark) he was able to focus on the maid and the pouring of milk more strongly. In Dutch this painting is confusingly called 'Het melkmeisje', suggesting it is a girl milking cows and bringing milk, instead of a kitchen maid pouring milk. It's therefore also known as the kitchen maid.
Vermeer used the beautiful ochre and ultramarine combination he also used in one of his other masterpieces, Girl with the pearl.
The painting is from around 1658 and now part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
About Johannes Vermeer
Johannes Vermeer, Dutch painter of the 17th century. He was a true Dutch Master and started out painting genre pieces and historic scenes. Later in his career he also made his well known portraits and cityscapes.
For each of the artworks we've included additional detail pictures to show the quality of the materals we work with.
The 'Dutch Masters art' brand was born in the heart of the historic center of Amsterdam, on the Singel canal. Every day many holiday makers enjoy the rich culture of The Netherlands, especially in museums like the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum. Inspired by these famous canals and the rich history of the 17th century Dutch art we started our collection. We started with art from the golden age, but in later years we also added other famous pieces from later date, including van Gogh. So now you can find both baroque art as well as (post-) modernism on our website. Our collection is handpicked for best quality and are made to order with the latest reproduction techniques available today.
