Vermeer's most recognized masterpiece, painted around 1665. It's a portrait of a unknown model (called a 'tronie'). Possibly it was the painters daughter, but that's not clear. It was named after the pearl earring in the center of the painting. Some argue it is an earring made of tin because of the specific surface reflection.
Vermeer used the beautiful ochre and ultramarine combination he also used in one of his other masterpieces, The Milkmaid.
Most famous is the girl's smile and her bright eyes that look straight at you. Together with distinct her red lips it gives this painting a magic appeal that is known all over the world.
Before it was rediscovered a a true Vermeer painting it was once sold at an auction for only 2 guilders and 30 cents (about one euro / dollar in today's money). The buyer (Des Tombe) already had a suspicion that it could be a real Vermeer. Today this painting is part of the permanent collection of the 'Mauritshuis' in The Hague, Holland. It was voted best Dutch painting of all times by readers of the newspaper 'Trouw'.
About Johannes Vermeer
Johannes Vermeer, Dutch painter of the 17th century. He was a true Dutch Master and started out painting genre pieces and historic scenes. Later in his career he also made his well known portraits and cityscapes.
For each of the artworks we've included additional detail pictures to show the quality of the materals we work with.
The 'Dutch Masters art' brand was born in the heart of the historic center of Amsterdam, on the Singel canal. Every day many holiday makers enjoy the rich culture of The Netherlands, especially in museums like the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum. Inspired by these famous canals and the rich history of the 17th century Dutch art we started our collection. We started with art from the golden age, but in later years we also added other famous pieces from later date, including van Gogh. So now you can find both baroque art as well as (post-) modernism on our website. Our collection is handpicked for best quality and are made to order with the latest reproduction techniques available today.
