This collective portrait by Rembrandt (also called 'The sampling officials' or 'De Staalmeesters' in Dutch) is one of the best known pieces by the painter. Rembrandt gave special attention to the table cloth by making it lighter, but also by lowering his point of view so a relative large portion of the cloth can be seen. This gives extra depth to the composition. These men (Drapers) were inspectors. They inspected the quality of the (samples of the) fabrics for the guild three times a week. This portrait was commissioned by the guild for their hall and was finished by Rembrandt in 1662. Today the original painting can be found in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Dutch master painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was one of the most important painters of the seventeenth century. He made historic paintings, militia pieces and portraits. Amongst these portraits are many self-portraits and sketches. Also his wife, Saskia, son Titus and even the maid and his girlfriends are portrayed.
His work can be seen as the pinnacle of the Dutch Baroque. He was clearly influenced by the Italian master Michelangelo Caravaggio.
Rembrandt best known for his light and dark style of painting ('clair-obscur' / 'chiaroscuro'). By adding light to an object or person the viewer immediately focusses on the subject the painter wanted the focus on. He also made a lot of sketches and etchings. Worldwide his 'Nightwatch', 'The Anatomy lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp', 'the Jewish bride' and 'The Syndics' are probably the most recognized. They can all be seen in museums in Netherlands.
For each of the artworks we've included additional detail pictures to show the quality of the materals we work with.
The 'Dutch Masters art' brand was born in the heart of the historic center of Amsterdam, on the Singel canal. Every day many holiday makers enjoy the rich culture of The Netherlands, especially in museums like the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum. Inspired by these famous canals and the rich history of the 17th century Dutch art we started our collection. We started with art from the golden age, but in later years we also added other famous pieces from later date, including van Gogh. So now you can find both baroque art as well as (post-) modernism on our website. Our collection is handpicked for best quality and are made to order with the latest reproduction techniques available today.
