Vincent van Gogh painted a series of sunflower paintings. This is regarded as the third version from the first series, with blue - green background. It's sometimes revered to as 'twelve sunflowers in a vase', although not complete accurate since there are actually more than twelve sunflowers in the painting. Van Gogh was totally captured by the sunlight of southern France and painted many aspects of nature. He wanted 'nothing but big flowers' to use for his own studio together with Gauguin in Arles, France.
This masterpiece by van Gogh can be seen in Munich, Germany.
About Van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh was a post impressionist painter. His influence on the later expressionism and 20th century art is evident. During his artistic career he worked in Nuenen, Antwerp, Paris and later Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers. His fight with Paul Gauguin is still a little bit unclear, but is is said that Van Gogh cut his own ear during one of the arguments with the other painter.
van Gogh was very close to his brother and there was a lot of correspondence between the two. Today a rich source of information about the life and work of Van Gogh. We know that he suffered from mental illness and that eventually lead to his death , age 37.
He painted both (self) portraits, landscapes and still-lifes. Amongst his greatest works are 'almond blossoms', 'sunflowers', 'starry night', 'cafe terrace' and many more.
